Sanofi Pasteur Receives Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence
Swiftwater site project hailed for environmental protection and responsible economic development benefits

Harrisburg, Pa. - April 22, 2009 -- This evening, sanofi pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group, will be recognized as one of the recipients of the 2009 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence. Sanofi Pasteur was selected from 40 applicants based on the company’s leadership and innovation in constructing its on-site wastewater treatment plant and spray irrigation expansion project, which was completed last summer.

The award demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental preservation, energy reduction and responsible economic development. By providing vital infrastructure to the Swiftwater facility using state-of-the-industry technologies, along with land preservation and conservation activities, the project enables the company to continue and expand its mission as the nation’s premier researcher, developer, manufacturer, and supplier of vaccines for the protection of human health in the United States and the world.

Sanofi Pasteur US President and Vice President of the Americas Damian Braga said, “This highly coveted award reinforces our company’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, environmental stewardship, and responsible site growth here in the Commonwealth.” According to Braga, the completion of the project is critical to the company’s continued expansion in Swiftwater.

The sanofi pasteur wastewater treatment and irrigation initiative is the only one of its kind in Northeast Pennsylvania, and one of the few in the Commonwealth.

The project provides several environmental benefits, including: watershed stewardship, wetlands protection, protection of Nature Conservancy deed restricted property, and savings of up to 30.6 million gallons of potable water per year by reuse of treated effluent for seasonal landscape irrigation and central utilities operations.

In addition to environmental stewardship, the project demonstrates economic benefit by providing the infrastructure that will enable growth and expansion of the Swiftwater facility, which would provide significant positive impact to the local community and region.

To obtain the permits necessary to complete these award-winning projects, sanofi pasteur worked closely with more than a half-dozen government officials and community partners, including the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC), Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), the Monroe County

Conservation District and Pocono Township.
